World festival Parade Brunssum 2000: Culture of Peace

History

"The Parade" originates in 1953. From solidarity with the victims of the flood disaster in the Dutch province of Zeeland, Carnival - Mardi Gras - celebrations were cancelled.
By way of alternative a modest three-dad folklore festival was organized. This initiative developed into the biggest folklore festival of the Netherlands and one of the major ones in Europe. The tenth International Folkloristic Parade in 1992, in which 35 countries from all over the world took part, even was the biggest CIOFF festival worldwide. All over the world Brunssum is a byword where hospitality, friendship and solidarity are concerned, owing to the four-yearly "feast of multi cultural meeting".
In 1996 Brunssum reached a new peak with the "First CIOFF World Folkloriada" in which some sixty countries with up to 75 groups in all fields of Folklore and traditional culture took part. This Folkolriada was the very first folklore festival of CIOFF mondial (Conseil International des Organisations des Festivals de Folklore et des Art Traditionnels), a worldwide umbrella organization with 75 affiliated countries. Among other things positive developments in Black Africa cause a swift increase of this number. Worth stating in the acknowledgement of the CIOFF by UNESCO as 'relation formelle de consultation'.
